Book
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 2nd Edition. Here is "The New Gold in Your Attic", by Van Allen Bradley. It is the 1968 Second Edition, Issued by Fleet Publishing Co. in New York, and remains part an important milestone for both dealers and collectors of old books.First there was Mr. Bradley's syndicated newspaper column - next due to the large quantity of letters begging for a published book on the subject, there was "Gold in Your Attic". then "More Gold in Your Attic", and then , finally:the book here presented, "The New Gold In Your Attic" On the dust-jacket is this excerpt from the blurb : |> This new and revised edition brings back into print the most famous of all modern handbooks for book collectors. "Gold in Your Attic", first published in 1958, has been widely imitated but remains the standard and definitive guide for the layman interested in the exciting world of rare books. In this new edition, Van Allen Bradley has completely revised the Guide too more than 2,500 scarce and rare American books and pamphlets to bring it into line with current trends. Included also, and brought up to date , is the original section of "42 Fabulous American Books and How to Recognize Them", together with title page illustrations." The valued cited, are, of course relegated to history, and are good only a a reference to how things were value-wise in1968. It was rare, back in the day, to find a used and antiquarian store that didn't keep Bradley's books on hand. Because of his sharp-eyed acumen, and his genial manner when describing the goodies, the book still has a great deal of appeal. <| *********************************************** TITLE : The New Gold in Your Attic / AUTHOR : Van Allen Bradley (1913 - 1984) / IMPRINT : Fleet Publishing Co. / PLACE : New York / DATE : (1968) / EDITION : Second Edition / STATUS : OP / DETAILS : Contains 42 title page facsimiles; [iv] + 280 pages; 5 3/8" x 7 7/8"; black , cloth-covered binding, with gilt lettering on spine; decorated dust-jacket. ************************************************ CONDITION BOOK : VERY GOOD JACKET : VERY GOOD This is a previously owned book that displays clear evidence of use, but which remains clean and tight, with the following particulars noted :: EXTERIOR : Spine extremities are compressed, and the bottom extremity is somewhat frayed; boards display modest weathering and a few small scuffs; board corners are nicely square; text-block edges lightly weathered, and there is a wee ink spot on the bottom, else clean . / BINDING : Solid / INTERIOR : Basically clean and free of marking. Book
Hardcover. Condition: Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. Here is "More Gold in Your Attic , Valuable Rare Books No. 2 "- by Van Allen Bradley. It is the 1962 Second Printing, Issued by Fleet Publishing Co., and remains an important milestone for both dealers and collectors of old books. In my opinion it was important : a Classic Bibliographical Reference Book. Now it is out of print - OP , and all of the prices quoted by Mr. Bradley are long out of date. Consider that a few decades after he wrote this book, prices took a sharp upswing. Why this book remains germane is Bradley's inimitable style in describing the books. It's an eclectic selection, but there are many important books described. Back in the day, many book dealers and collectors put their trust in Van Allen Bradley. Rightly. Especially interesting (and a boon to both dealer and collector) are the facsimiles of title pages. It is a good thing to familiarize yourself with such title pages, because , even if you can remember all the titles, when out booking, a memory of what a title page actually looks like can add piquancy to a search that is often, due to circumstances, under the clock. Of course some of these books, such as what is known as "The Bay Psalms Book" are extremely rare and one is not likely to find one. All the few copies are known - but . such is the nature of hope . and combined with a solid visual memory, one will always be keeping one's eyes open for such a title. It's a very interesting collection of books that Mr. Bradley offers up. Not many of the titles listed in this book come anywhere near to the rarity (and value) of the 1640 "The Whole Book of Psalms Faithfully Translated into English Metre". But such is the nature of hope, especially hope buttressed by knowledge. One might, perhaps, set one's sight on Sinclair Lewis's little-known venture into juvenile titles ("Hike and the Aeroplane"). ****************************************** TITLE : More Gold in Your Attic, Valuable Rare Books No. 2 / AUTHOR : Van Allen Bradley (1913 - 1984) / IMPRINT : Fleet Publishing Co. / PLACE : New York / DATE : (1962) / EDITION : Second Printing / STATUS : OP / DETAILS : Contains many title page facsimiles; 415 pages; 5 3/8" x 7 7/8"; black , cloth-covered binding, with gilt lettering on spine; text-block edges dyed pale tan; decorated dust-jacket. ***************************************** CONDITION BOOK : NEAR VERY GOOD JACKET : GOOD ONLY This is a previously owned book that displays clear evidence of use, but which remains clean and tight, with the following particulars noted :: EXTERIOR : Spine extremities are compressed, and the bottom extremity is somewhat frayed; boards display modest weathering and a few small spots (or scuffs); board corners are nicely square; bottom edges of boards display shelf rub; text-block edges are weathered displaying, also, various small spots and smudges. / BINDING : Solid - tight / INTERIOR : End-papers , especially the rear, display moderate wear, including scattered small. spotting and a touch of foxing; the rest of the interior is clean and free of marking.
