First Edition
Softcover. Condition: Near Fine. No Jacket. First Edition. The uncorrected proof copy. A travel account by the peerless British writer, author of Into the Heart of Borneo and In Trouble Again, among others. O'Hanlon is perhaps the closest direct descendant of the eccentric British travel writers of the 19th century, whose explorations helped create a short-lived empire but also, almost in spite of themselves, enormously enriched the available pool of knowledge about the multitudinous tribal cultures and diverse ethnicities of the world. Long crease to front cover; near fine in wrappers. Unless otherwise noted, our first editions are first printings.

Condition: very good. First edition. London : Hamish Hamilton, 1996. Orig. cloth binding. Dustjacket. [8],472 pp. With 16 b/w plates. - Congo Journey (1996) is an autobiographical novel by British author Redmond O'Hanlon (1947-), following his trip across Congo-Brazzaville (now Republic of the Congo), taking a friend to Lake Tele in search of Mokèlé-mbèmbé, a legendary Congo dinosaur. Travel writer Michael Shapiro considers the book as one of the "top 30 travel books of all time," and declares the book, chronicling the author's search for the legendary dinosaur, to be in the literary tradition of Joseph Conrad. O'Hanlon's adventure, he says, is by turns dangerous and funny, as he "takes the long way to the lake and nearly gets killed by a village headman", trying to save a baby gorilla, while he "battles his demons and the haunting spirits of Central Africa." According to Shapiro, O'Hanlon emerges from the jungle a changed man. The novel was republished in 1997 for United States readers as No Mercy: A Journey to the Heart of the Congo. Condition : very good copy. ISBN 9780241127681. Keywords : AFRICA, Congo.

SIGNED hardcover first edition - First US printing. A modern classic of travel literature: "Ostensibly a quest for Mokele-mbembe, the Congo dinosaur , this story of travel through the jungles and swamp forests of the northern Congo is Tolstoyan in its depth, scope and range of characters, and as vivid as Nabokov in its image and detail. A portrait of a country, it is alive with natural history: eagles and parrots, hornbills and sunbirds, forest cobras and crocodiles, gorillas and elephants. A search for the meaning of sorcery, the purpose of religion (and a celebration of the comfort and mysteries of science), it is also an adventure told with great narrative force. Of course there is a darker side to the Congo, and that too is recorded here." Kazuo Ishiguro called this a "unique messy masterpiece." SIGNED on the title page. Maps, photographs, bibliography. 462 pp. Very near fine in a like dustjacket.
