This famous tragedy begins as Lear, the old king of England, demands declarations of affection from his three daughters before he divides his kingdom between them. When thehonest Cordelia refuses to make such falsely lavish statements as her sisters, Lear givesher no land; he learns only too late of his elder daughters' insincerity. The King's subsequent madness finds no relief, as his family is ruined by his own myopia and by the greed of the elder daughters, Goneril and Regan.
