About the Author:
Douglas first took to the amateur stage in a production of The White Horse Inn for the Parramatta New Theatre Company in Sydney, Australia. It wasn’t long before he realised that he much preferred working behind-the-scenes in marketing and publicity, and eventually in producing musicals. For the next ten years, he produced shows, established theatre groups and had a finger in all aspects of production, including the occasional onstage cameo when a silent walk-on part beckoned. At age 22, he commissioned and professionally staged the full-length concert musical version of Mike Batt’s The Hunting Of The Snark and launched the first show by Australian comedy duo The Umbilical Brothers. He toured a series of one man shows and helped to develop several new musicals. In 1994/5 he was a co-producer of one of the world’s first amateur productions of Les Miserables which ran for 42 performances with over 40,000 people attending the show. Based in London, Douglas is now Editor of Amateur Stage Magazine where he continues to stimulate interest in amateur theatre and encourages development of modern theatre practice.
