Mercenary is based on a true story. Perhaps I should have made that more explicit in an author's note at the back but the novel hews quite closely to the historical record. Lee Christmas was real and his exploits were just as incredible as depicted. Indeed, he was one of the most famous men in America a hundred years ago, with his escapades regularly featuring in the Sunday supplements, and he has been largely forgotten since.
