Virginia Tech Students Tell It Like It Is

So what's a Hokie, anyway?

Ask a Virginia Tech student, and they'll probably reply, "I'm a Hokie."

But here's the real answer:
Virginia Tech students are Hokies, the buildings here are made of Hokie stone, and students' IDs are called their Hokie Passports. But what's a Hokie? The term "Hokie" came from a cheer made in 1896. The cheer goes like this:
Hokie, Hokie, Hokie, Hy,

Techs, Techs, V.P.I.

Sola-Rex, Sola-Rah

Polytechs - Virginia

Rae, Ri, V.P.I.

The term Hokie was probably just made up to rhyme, but somehow it stuck. Now everyone at Tech uses the word.

This is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to insider information about Virginia Tech...the current students have a lot to tell prospective students. The College Prowler guidebook to Virginia Tech is filled with hundreds of quotes from students on everything from campus dining to housing to nightlife. Don't take the school's word for it when it comes to what the Virginia Tech experience is really like-find out from the experts, the students themselves!

What are students at Virginia Tech raving and complaining about:

"I love Blacksburg. It's a little town in the middle of the mountains. Only here can you go hiking on the Appalachian Trail or tubing in the New River during the day, then go dancing and bar hopping at night and still be close enough to walk home. Christiansburg is a nearby town that has any place for dining or shopping that is not available in quaint downtown Blacksburg."

"The food on campus is awesome. It's just the way your mother used to make it, except good. We have everything from green beans and mac-n-cheese to boiled lobster."

"There are good dorms and bad dorms. The nice ones are suite-style and carpeted, the kind you walk around in barefooted and feel comfortable, and the bad ones you walk in the door and immediately feel the need to take a shower."

"Being a guy, I guess you could say most of the girls here are hot. Okay, they're really hot, and they're usually open to talking. It's different from high school. They're more mature, and they actually respond to respect. Nice guys don't always finish last."

"Someone is always willing to go get drunk on campus, and off campus, entire neighborhoods are always drunk, like the one I live in. I haven't met any of my neighbors sober."

"I love Virginia Tech. Bottom line: I could not ask for a better school. It has everything I could ever want-the people, athletics, and organizations are amazing. But you get out of it what you put in it. The one thing I can recommend is to get involved. No matter what it is, just find something you like and do it. If VT doesn't have a group or organization you want to join, then find two other people and create your own group."

Find out if Virginia Tech truly has something for you, straight from the students' mouths.

Visiting campus isn't enough.

About the Author:
I wish I d written this guidebook my freshman year or at least read a book like this. Writing this book has taught me so much about my school that I didn t know before. For instance, I had no idea there were so many student organizations. As a senior, putting together this guidebook has allowed me to look at Virginia Tech and evaluate the experience I ve had here. I have to admit that I ve been very lucky to be able to have opportunities like writing for College Prowler. When I became an English major at Tech, I did so just because I enjoyed reading novels and writing. I really found a direction when I decided to have a concentration in professional writing. I took classes that caught my attention, and then was able to participate in internships and organizations that allowed me to actually try out what I was studying.

I ve written for Foresters Incorporated, designed and contributed work to Happenings (an Engineering Science and Mechanics Department publication), and participated as a staff member for two separate literary magazines at Tech (Silhouette and the Brush Mountain Review). While I ve gained a strong academic foundation at Tech, I really feel that a lot of my education has come from doing work for these internships and organizations. I ve challenged myself while at Tech, and I decided to get two degrees: a BA in English and a BS in psychology. As graduation approaches, I m hoping to get out in the workplace and concentrate on a career in professional writing.

I hope you ve enjoyed this guidebook; I had a lot of fun writing it. Let me know what you thought about the book or ask me questions about Tech. I definitely have a few people I d like to thank for helping me get where I am today. I d like to thank my mom, dad, and my brother Jonathan for their constant support and encouragement. Thanks to Dr. Marie Paretti, who taught me how to find my audience, and then provided me with opportunities to do so. Thanks to the English Students Society for all the fun times. I d also like to thank Justin, Steph, Shannon, Deanna, Tim, the lifeguards at McComas and War, and everyone else who s made my time at Tech so much fun. But most of all, thank you College Prowler for such a great opportunity!
