University of Richmond Students Tell It Like It Is

Things I Wish I Knew Before Coming to University of Richmond
* Orientation week isn't actually "dry;" go to the frat parties.
* You have to buy the kind of power cord the school tells you to buy.
* If your dorm isn't air-conditioned, bring several fans.
* Try to meet as many people as possible.
* Bring lots of collared shirts; the dress code here is preppy.
* The football team sucks and no one goes to the games.
* You will get a lot of homework.
These are just a few of the things that Richmond students think you should know before you come to the University. There's a lot more to a school than you can find out from the University itself, and that's where College Prowler comes in! The University of Richmond guidebook gives you access to student perspectives before you ever set foot on campus. Find out what students have to say about everything from academics to athletics to nightlife. Don't wait until you're enrolled to find out what the University of Richmond is really like!

The University of Richmond is a great place for those who like to take charge. In fact, UR's Jepson Leadership School is the first undergraduate school in the nation devoted entirely to educating and training students in leadership studies.

But if you are from the North (a.k.a. a Yankee), you might want to take your Type A personality elsewhere. Otherwise, prepare yourself for the slow Southern pace.

"Richmond is a little too Southern for me. I am from Boston, and I would be permanently pissed off if I lived down here all the time. Things move way too slowly. People who wait on you in restaurants take forever, and fast food is just food, not very fast. Don't even get me started on the driving situation; there are nothing but Sunday drivers here."

"For all extensive purposes, the University of Richmond could be located on the moon. Hardly any of the students venture outside of the 'UR Bubble,' which is the invisible barrier that seems to keep everyone on campus all the time."

The UR Bubble can be just as much a blessing as a curse.

"I've had beer stolen from my refrigerator, but that is the extent of the criminal activity at UR. It is as safe as a school gets."

"House parties are great. You don't have to pay for drinks, there are usually shuttles to drive you to and from them, and they often have fun themes. My favorite theme party was Space Jam, when one frat filled an entire room with packing peanuts and everyone dressed up bizarre and . . . I don't remember much else, but it was fun."

And the bubble isn't very big.

"Richmond is good overall. I don't like the fact that it is as small as it is, and that it is so much like high school in terms of having to worry about your reputation and social standing and all that. It is a lot of fun anyway, though."

Find out if the University of Richmond has something for you, straight from the students' mouths.

Visiting campus isn't enough.

Read our University of Richmond insider's guide and discover what it feels like to be on campus for 4 years.

About the Author:
I had fun writing this book and look forward to publishing more in the future. I want to thank the folks at College Prowler for this opportunity, and say that I feel bad because I enjoyed writing this so much that it hardly seemed like work. I graduated from UR with a major in journalism with minors in philosophy and sociology. I m originally from Pennsylvania (Go Eagles), but I currently reside in Honolulu, Hawaii and couldn t be happier. If you have any questions or comments on my work or want to give me a job please e-mail me at peterhansen@collegeprowler.com.

But enough about me, I also want to thank several people for their help and support especially Laz, Elo, Swilson, Jon E. Madden, Gerald Holden, VinBeth, the Paper Moon, Shadow, the BVC, the inspirational music of Jefferson Starship, as well as everyone in my family Mom and Dad, Krista, Grandmom, Steve, Ann, Chuck and everyone else I didn t mention. Mahola!

College Prowler is the needed link between students and guidebooks. It's students, writing for future students, about their student experience. It's like having an older sibling that went to the school and is telling you all about it.
