I've studied Native American culture for many years and have spent a lot of time in the Four Corners region, where the novel takes place, studying the Puebloan peoples who settled that area; my readings and studies have been melded into Lesley's story, who actually is modeled after one of my former students. The works of Carlos Castaneda, especially The Art of Dreaming, have been extremely important to me too and provide the philosophical background to the story.
