My Dearest Jack,

I wish I knew where you are tonight, my love. Are you looking at the same twinkling stars in the sky? Are you safe, warm, and comfortable? I pray that you are.

This war has stretched on for far too long. The Baker family down the street lost two of their sons in the Gettysburg battle where I met you. Their mother sobs for them daily. How sorrowful to know your boys died in their own hometown.

Mother and I are planning our garden for this coming spring. The ground is very fertile here in this part of Pennsylvania. I imagine the Army food can be quite repetitious. I hope to stuff you full of fresh green beans, cabbage, onions, and potatoes when you come home. Our apple tree produces plenty of fruit for pies as well.
