Current through October 2011, including the new restaurant carry law and new car carry law. You have spent thousands of dollars and countless hours: 1. selecting your handgun 2. choosing your ammunition 3. picking your holster 4. completing your training and 5. obtaining your license. How much have you invested in knowing what the law is and how to comply with it? The unfortunate reality is that Ohio's training requirements do not include a presentation from an Attorney on the essential question facing a citizen carrying a gun in Ohio: How not to get arrested. Written by an attorney with trial experience with Ohio's concealed carry laws, in plain English, this book covers all relevant portions of Ohio's Law, including general firearm laws, open carry, concealed carry, motorvehicle transportation and carry, use of force, castle doctrine and other liability issues. Also included are up-to-date copies of all relevant statutes so the law is "at your fingertips" wherever you travel.

About the Author:
Ken Hanson is an Ohio attorney with trial experience in use of force cases from both the prosecution and defense tables. Ken has represented and assisted many dozens of licensees since Ohio's law passed in 2004. The brief in the McDonald case was cited by the court in footnotes of the majority opinion.) The National Rifle Association's Institute for Legislative Action (NRA-ILA) has awarded him with its 2008 Defender of Justice Award and 2009 Jay M. Littlefield Volunteer of the Year Award. He is the author of The Ohio Guide to Firearm Laws, a certified firearms instructor and holds a Type 01 Federal Firearms License.
Review:
As ORPA President, I often get asked about Ohio firearm laws. Although I always try to help people get the right answer, I always start out by saying that I am not a lawyer and I fully recognize my limitations in attempting to explain the unfortunate labyrinth that is Ohio and U.S firearm law. Unfortunately, this labyrinth often appears to be created to trap law-abiding citizens rather than to punish criminals. Well, Ken Hanson is a lawyer and knows more about Ohio firearm law than anyone else I know. He s also been heavily involved in the fight for concealed carry in Ohio and for your rights as Ohioans and Americans and last year received the Defender of Justice award from the NRA-ILA. Best of all, he s an ORPA Life Member! Ken is the author of The Ohio Guide to Gun Laws , the third edition of which has just been released. I ve just finished reading it, and it is excellent and fully up-to-date. It includes all of the changes from our successes in 2008, including Ohio Senate Bill 184 and House Bill 450. The book is written in a common-sense and entertaining way, and I can recommend it to anyone who is often puzzled, as most of us are, by Ohio and Federal firearm laws. --David Johnson, President, Ohio Rifle and Pistol Association --David Johnson, past President, Ohio Rifle and Pistol Association

I recently finished reading The Ohio Guide to Firearm Laws by Ken Hanson, now in the third edition. For all the people who have acquired their first CHL in the past year, this book should be considered a must-read. For those who have already read one of the previous editions, there is enough new material in the latest version to make it worthy investment of your time and money. If you are going to play a game, you need to know the rules. Carrying a gun, or using it for self defense, are far more serious than any game, and it is infinitely more important that you fully know and understand the rules. This is complicated by the fact that the rules keep changing. Ignorance is no excuse. Hanson is the most knowledgeable person regarding Ohio firearms laws, period. No one else has the combined experience as a prosecutor, defender, and lobbyist to give them a better understanding of Ohio's firearms laws. Hanson's book describes the law in terms that average citizens can understand, and has the applicable Ohio Revised Code sections included for those who like to refer to it. One book, once source to answer all your basic questions. Being directly involved in the lobbying for changes to the law, I was surprised much I learned reading his book. As the saying goes, you don't know what you don't know. And what you don't know could land you in a heap of trouble. If you don't like paying attorneys, then think of this book as a form of "retainer" insurance. Hanson's book explains criminal and firearms laws in general terms. It gives the background as to why our laws are the way they are so that the gun owner can have some context to explain, "Why would they do that!?" (Note not all those questions are answered in this book, but enough to give you the feel for the problem, and thus start working toward a solution.) The book also covers self-defense issues, both lethal and non-lethal and liability issues. It is a hollow victory to save your life from criminal attack, only to lose it to criminal prosecutions or liability lawsuits. You must win every battle. This book is great foundation to help you build a sound plan that will keep you out of trouble. Think of the knowledge as legal tactics to survive in a dangerous (litigious) society. Far too often we are contacted by someone who has been charged with a firearms-related offense. The situations vary from misdemeanors with a possible few hundred dollar fine to felonies with mandatory prison time. Note I'm NOT talking about "criminal" activity here, I'm talking about regular people just like you who often don't even understand what they did wrong --Jim Irvine, President, Buckeye Firearms Association
