The Soldier's View: The Civil War Art Of Keith Rocco - Hardcover

The Soldier's View is a unique telling of the Civil War from the point of view of the men who did the fighting. Artist Keith Rocco's paintings chronicle the major battles of the war, as well as the more common and mundane experiences of the common soldiers on both sides of the conflict. In writing the narrative, I attempted to use as many primary sources as possible to provide fresh individual insights into the every day reality of the Union and Confederate soldiers. Thus I chose from a myriad of first person accounts, rather than just relying on the more familiar sources.

Keith Rocco's murals cover more than 4,000 square feet at The National Museum of the Civil War Soldier at Pamplin Historical Park near Petersburg, Virginia. His work is also featured at more than a dozen National Park Service sites as well as the Wisconsin Veterans Museum, the U.S. House of Representatives, the Andrew Mellon Foundation, the Atlanta Historical Society, and the new Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum in Springfield, Illinois. Keith lives in Virginia's Shenandoah Valley.
Robert I. Girardi earned his M.A. in Public History from Loyola University of Chicago. He is a past president of the Chicago Civil War Round Table, and is the author of nine published books, numerous essays and book reviews, and is a popular speaker on all aspects of the Civil War, to audiences of all ages and levels of interest. He is on the board of directors of the Illinois State Historical Society and the Camp Douglas Restoration Foundation. He was the 2010 winner of the Chicago CWRT Nevins-Freeman Award for scholarship and service.
