In this book, the members of the U.S. Supreme Court are examined in nine biographical essays written by nine different essayists. The essays do not have a unifying theme; moreover, they vary in quality. The best essays--American University law professor Herman Schwartz on Byron White and United Press International reporter Andrea Neale on John Paul Stevens--give an overview of the justice's attitudes and voting consistency. David Savage's profile of the "Lady," Sandra Day O'Connor, rather unfairly diminishes her importance in Court decisions. Despite such unevenness, however, this book will improve lay readers' understanding of the U.S. Supreme Court and its justices and will provide a historical perspective of the Court's main legal issues during the last decade.
