Grade 7-10 - This collection of essays opens with pieces that provide a historical survey of the conflict's origins, followed by perspectives on the actions and attitudes of both Palestinians and Israelis. Actual residents of the area and a Palestinian refugee tell their stories of living under current conditions, thereby revealing the human cost of the continuing conflict. Proposals for potential solutions to the struggle complete the volume. Most of the essays offer reasoned arguments rather than fanatical statements. The fundamental religious tenets and principles that fuel the differences between these two peoples and their positions on the value of the disputed lands are not fully explored. Extensive back matter includes a chronology from 1881 to May 2003 and a list of partisan as well as neutral organizations concerned with the Middle East. A finely detailed index provides ready access to even small subtopics. Recent significant events in the area make even this publication somewhat dated. Yet it is a worthy addition to a large group of other volumes that provide background information on which to base understanding of any developments still to come in the region. - Ann G.
