Gr 5-9--Writing with clarity and confidence, Muhlberger reveals the individual ``handwriting'' of these artists by analyzing a dozen or so of their major works, pointing out their use of light and shadow, repetition of shapes, choices of medium, and other techniques that define their styles. Many of the paintings, which are splendidly reproduced in full color, are from the Metropolitan Museum of Art's collection, but there are generous borrowings from private sources and other museums, making the books truly representative of each artist's career. A few biographical details are mentioned, but the author does not concern himself, or young readers, with the scandals, tragedies, and controversies that are part of the subjects' personal histories. Produced on heavy, glossy paper and designed with a variety of visual effects, these titles are delightfully informative and fine supplements to detailed biographies.
