About the Author:
Joan L. Brown is Elias Ahuja Chair of Spanish at the University of Delaware. She teaches at the intermediate through graduate levels with courses on Spanish conversation, Hispanic literature by women, and contemporary Spanish literature and culture. Professor Brown's research interests include second-language acquisition, literary canon formation, and the contemporary Spanish novel.
Carmen Martin Gaite is one of the most honored writers of contemporary Spain and the only author who has won Spain's National Prize for Literature twice. Her best-known novel is the fantastic memoir El cuarto de atrás (The Back Room). She earned a doctorate in language and literature from the University of Madrid and has published award-winning nonfiction. She has also authored stories, poems, plays, screenplays, and mini-dramas for learning Spanish, which she named conversaciones creadoras.
