From the Inside Flap:
"Bill, lookout!"
Cody looked sharply towards the station, trying to spot his friend. But Ethan didn't look that way; dropping instinctively into a crouch, his eyes quickly scanned the street, searching for danger. He saw the shotgunner step around the back of the wagon-saw the scattergun coming out from beneath the yellow duster. Other people saw the gun, too. He heard a woman scream, and a man ran directly across the line of fire in a panicked effort to get out of the way.
"Get down!" Ethan grabbed Cody as he shouted the warning, swinging Buffalo Bill roughly around. Buffalo Bill lost his balance and sprawled in the muck of the street. Ethan yanked the Colt out of the holster and threw himself sideways as the scattergun came up and flame belched from one of the barrels. The buckshot whistled over his head. He hit the ground and rolled and came up on one knee, firing a split second before the shotgunner could cut loose with the second barrel. A man on the boardwalk in front of the barbershop went down. The plate glass window behind him was shattered.
Ethan checked the shotgunner; he was down, but still alive, writhing in the mud. Rising, Ethan brought the Colt up, took careful aim, and fired a second time. The shotgunner's body jerked, and then was still.
Ethan felt lancing pain in his right calf, and his legs were knocked out from under him, before he heard the next shotgun blast. He landed poorly, knocking the air out of his lungs. Another of Letcher's men was coming from another alley on the opposite side of the street...
